Conclusion

Write a conclusion that lands

By the time you reach the conclusion you're tired, and it shows: most conclusions repeat the abstract and trail off into "more research is needed". A good one answers the question from the introduction, states what follows from that, and ends.

For course designers, the practical point is timing. Returning shorter comments within three days is likely to do more for revision than detailed comments after two weeks.

The problem

Why conclusions disappoint

It's the last thing a reader sees and often the least considered part of the paper.

The abstract, again

A section-by-section recap of what the reader has just finished reading, with nothing added.

New material at the last minute

A fresh result, citation or argument that should have appeared earlier, where it could be examined.

Claims that outrun the paper

A modest finding in the results becomes a sweeping statement in the final paragraph.

The empty ending

"Further research is needed." On what, exactly, and why would it matter?

Step by step

How to do it in LitraMind

Write it in one sitting, with the introduction open beside it.

  1. Reread your introduction

Open your finished paper and copy the research question or aim to the top of the conclusion. The conclusion's first job is to answer it.

    About Write New Paper
  2. Write the answer yourself

Two or three sentences, in words, without statistics. If you can't state the answer plainly, the discussion needs more work first.

  3. Get a draft to compare against

Use AI Write's Generate Conclusion prompt with your document as context. Read it as a check on what your paper appears to say; keep your own answer and borrow only what's accurate.

  4. Add what follows

One short paragraph on implications: who should do or think something differently. Write it with Ghost Text if it helps you keep going.

  5. Match the strength of your claims

Compare each sentence with your results and discussion. Use Change Tone or edit by hand where the conclusion has become more confident than the evidence.

  6. Cut the recap

Delete any sentence that only repeats an earlier section, then use Trim. Run AI Edit for a final check.

What a conclusion is for

It closes the argument the introduction opened. The two should read as a pair.

What goes in, what stays out

A conclusion is short because most of its content already exists in the paper. Its work is selection and emphasis.

A direct answer to the research questionA summary of each section

Conclusion or discussion?

The discussion interprets the results in detail and sets them against other studies. The conclusion steps back and says what the paper established. Some journals merge them, in which case the conclusion is the final paragraph of the discussion.

If your journal has a separate Conclusions heading, keep it to one or two paragraphs.

How long

For a journal article, a paragraph or two is usual. For an essay, around a tenth of the word count is a common guide. A thesis conclusion is a chapter: it revisits each research question, draws the findings together, and sets out contributions, limitations and future work.

The last sentence

End on the contribution or its consequence, stated plainly. Avoid closing on a limitation, an apology or a quotation. You don't need to begin with "In conclusion"; the heading already says so.

What researchers and students say

“It helped me write a conclusion that actually answered the research question instead of simply repeating the discussion.”

“My original conclusion was mostly a summary. The revised version made the contribution and implications much clearer.”

Brian M•••Doctoral Researcher, Public HealthW••• University, United States

“It was useful for deciding which findings were important enough to appear again in the conclusion and which could be left out.”

Shreya B•••Research Scholar, Environmental ScienceN••• Institute for E••• R•••, India

“The conclusion became considerably shorter while saying more clearly what the study had actually contributed.”

Nina K•••PhD Researcher, PsychologyR••• University, Germany

“It helped me avoid introducing new arguments at the end of the paper, which had been a problem in my first draft.”

“The final paragraph was much stronger once the future research suggestions were tied directly to the study's limitations.”

What stays your job

A conclusion is a judgment about your own work.

  • Deciding what the paper's main point is. A generated conclusion reflects the text it was given, including its weaknesses.
  • Keeping claims honest. Check every statement against your results.
  • Knowing your journal's format: separate section, combined with discussion, or a word limit.

See plans and limits
Can AI write my conclusion?
AI Write has a Generate Conclusion prompt that drafts one from your document. Treat it as a draft to check: make sure it answers your actual research question and doesn't overstate the findings.
How long should a conclusion be?
One or two paragraphs for most journal articles, roughly a tenth of an essay, and a full chapter for a thesis. Follow your guidelines where they give a limit.
Should I include limitations in the conclusion?
Mention the most important one briefly if the paper has no separate limitations section. The detailed treatment belongs in the discussion.
Can I introduce a new idea in the conclusion?
No new evidence or arguments. Suggestions for future research are the exception, and they should follow from what the paper found.
How is a conclusion different from an abstract?
The abstract summarizes the whole paper for someone who hasn't read it. The conclusion is for someone who has, and tells them what to take away.
